Ely Reeves Callaway, Jr., president of Burlington Textile, was an avid golfer. The player, Callaway always used wooden golf clubs manufactured by a company called Hickory Sticks. Like many of the old wooden club manufacturers, Hickory Sticks was in financial crisis and started looking for investors to get them out of trouble. One person who approached was Callaway. He had just sold his vineyards for a nice profit and was looking for a new investment. Why not, he thought, combine business with pleasure.

In 1982, Ely Callaway purchased 50% of Hickory Sticks and changed the company name to Callaway Hickory Sticks, USA. Six years later the Hickory Sticks name was dropped all together.

Realizing that golf club manufacturing was on the verge of an explosion technique, Callaway knew the company needed a new direction. In 1986 he asked Richard Helmstetter, of all things a billiard cue designer, to consult with the company on the design and the best club in the new technology in materials and workmanship. His ideas were well received and soon became the chief designer of the golf club Callaway.

Under Helmstetter, Callaway Golf Club soon introduced computerized manufacturing and its first major success was the indomitable Big Bertha driver. The original Big Bertha had a large steel club head that measured 190 cubic centimeters. A later version, introduced in 1997, grew to 290 cc. Big Bertha revolutionized the controller golf and became the cornerstone of Callaway Golf.

Roger Cleveland, founder of Cleveland Golf, Callaway joined in 1996 as chief designer of the club, and soon the company is working to develop cutting edge fusion plates.

Six years later, Callaway Golf introduced the forged wedges. Constructed of carbon steel, golf wedges included a clubface that contained special U-shaped grooves Soon Callaway was offering a full line of timber high-tech golf, irons, wedges and putters. Also in 2002, Callaway Introduced the Callaway Golf golf ball. Its engineers use sophisticated software to analyze and evaluate the hundreds of dimple patterns and more than 1,000 nuclei golf ball cover materials. The result was Rule 35 balls that the combined distance, control, spin and durability in a golf ball.

Today, Callaway Golf, through its acquisitions and internal development, sells golf clubs and accessories under the Callaway Golf, Ben Hogan and Top-Flight Brands. Once the home of only the Big Bertha, now, every golfer, from amateur to PGA professional can carry a full set of Callaway golf clubs.

Ely Callaway, who made Callaway Golf the Old Hickory sticks to a major golf innovative companies, resigned as CEO in 1996. Two years later he returned to redirect the company, but sadly died of pancreatic cancer in 2001.

The aim of Callaway Golf is the design and manufacture golf equipment that will make each golfer a better golfer. Golf clubs and accessories of their brands are frequent visitors to many major publications such as Golf Digest's list of "hot" and options the editor.
